At Westbury House School, we focus on both the academic and pastoral wellbeing of our pupils. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the beginning of your child’s learning journey. When joining Pre School or the Reception class, your child will become a member of one of four Houses and be involved in activities within their own year group and as part of their House across the school enabling them to take an active part in the whole school community.

The Early Years department consists of 3 classes. Little Learners, for children aged between 2 and 3 years, Pre School for children aged between 3 and 4 years and the Reception class for children aged 4-5 years. Your child will be supported to achieve their full potential by experienced Early Years teachers and support staff. We encourage children to become confident and independent learners who are proud of their achievements.

Our curriculum is based around the seven areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage and is delivered through half termly cross curricular topics. It has a strong focus on Literacy and Maths and is enhanced by specialist teaching in Reception in swimming and games. A high proportion of our children exceed national averages in all areas at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

We recognise children learn best when they are actively engaged in meaningful experiences; so, our planning is flexible to enable us to meet the needs and interests of individual children. The curriculum is enriched through termly educational trips linked to our topics and visitors to school. The children also participate in science week, problem solving day, French day and book week activities.

Home/school partnerships are the foundation of successful learning. We work closely with parents and have regular contact formally and informally to keep them informed of their child’s progress, Parents are made to feel welcome and are encouraged to take an active part of school life.

The children leave the Early Years Foundation Stage with a positive attitude to learning and equipped with the skills needed for the challenges of the next stage of their education.
