The older children from Nursery accompanied Reception, Years 1, 2 and 3 on a visit to the beautiful Buddhist Buddapadipa Temple in Wimbledon on a warm spring afternoon.
On arrival we admired the imposing red, white and gold temple, walked around the colourful and well-tended gardens and crossed a stream into a serene wooded area dotted with statues of the Buddha. Here children were free to draw scenes from nature or one of the numerous statues while waiting for our turn to enter the temple and listen to a talk from one of the monks.
When we did go in, the temple was a riot of white and gold ornaments, candles, enormous Buddhas and impressive, colourful murals depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha. The monk leading the visit explained some of the images and did some meditation with the children who were totally fascinated by the whole experience. All too soon it was time to return to school after what had been a most informative and inspiring visit.
