Westbury House School is a school with very musical roots – its founders were passionate about music in education. In recent years, the curriculum has been considerably developed and expanded, and the Music Department now comprises two award-winning choirs, a school orchestra, six visiting peripatetic music teachers, and a popular educational outreach programme, under the leadership of the Head of Music.

The classroom curriculum has its foundations in the multifaceted ‘Kodaly Method’. The method develops pupils’ singing abilities and sound qualities alongside instrumentbased learning with pitched percussion instruments. Aural skills, improvisation and composition skills are developed through the understanding of pitch and rhythm, phrasing, tempo, metre, timbre, dynamics and textures. The musical styles and features of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras are also explored, and the pupils enjoy learning about contemporary styles such as world music, pop, Jazz and rock.

There are many highlights to the musical year, including performances at the annual Carol Concert, the Nativity Play, Summer Concerts and the annual fully staged musical production. In these, Westbury House School’s very popular Junior and Senior Choirs perform alongside solo and ensemble performances from those learning piano, guitar, woodwind (clarinet and flute), brass (trumpet and cornet), violin and singing – all instruments that are offered at school. Our pupils are successful in their ABRSM and Trinity/Laban examinations and are often awarded prizes at local competitions and festivals. Our Choirs also perform regularly in concerts both in School and in nearby venues.

Our peripatetic teachers are invited to perform in Westbury House School’s recently founded ‘Klassical Kids’ educational outreach programme, which takes place once a term. Aimed at pre-school aged children and their parents/carers, it gives the children the opportunity to experience live music in an informal and relaxed setting, before joining in with a selection of popular nursery rhymes.

Westbury House School is extremely proud to have such a vibrant music department, with so much music making at its heart. We hope you enjoy listening to the live recordings of our award-winning Choirs in the Multimedia section of our website, and should there be any questions about what we offer at Westbury House School, we would be delighted to hear from you.
